About Porjus

Porjus is located halfway between Jokkmokk and Gällivare on the E45 Inlandsvagen road, some 60 km north of the Arctic Circle. The village is the natural entrance to the Unesco World Heritage site of Laponia in the far north of Sweden. This area includes four of the largest national parks in Sweden: the Sarek, Muddus, Padeljanta and Stora Sjöfallet. Porjus was founded in early 1900 with the building of one of the biggest hydropower plants of Sweden. Today Porjus is a relaxed village with just over 400 inhabitants.

Porjus is a very special place during the winter.. In October the snow arrives and changes the face of the landscape for the following 6–7 months. These months are a wonderful and unique time, offering the visitor an arctic experience. You can ice fish; cross country ski on the many kilometers of prepared tracks; alpine ski on the small ski slope; ride a dog sled or snowmobile on miles of marked routes. And every night you have the possibility to see one of natures most awesome spectacles – the Northern Lights.

Porjus is the ideal location for watching Northern Lights. Besides having long winter nights and a good track record of cloudless days and nights , there is no light pollution and a you will have a clear view all around.

Your apartment is at the edge of the village at the frozen lake. There are windows to the east and west so you don't even have to go outside to see the Lights. Everyone who loves nature and loves seeing unique natural phenomena should go and see this!
